Shirodhara (Continuous Oil Flow on Forehead)

Shirodhara (Continuous Oil Flow on Forehead)

Shirodhara is one of the best-known therapies of Kerala Ayurveda. A thin, steady stream of warm medicated oil – or, in some forms, medicated milk or buttermilk – is poured over the forehead in a gentle rhythm for 30 to 45 minutes. It is deeply relaxing and is traditionally used to calm Vata and Pitta, the doshas linked with a restless mind, heat and poor sleep.

How a Shirodhara session works

  1. Consultation: our doctor checks your health and chooses the oil or liquid for you.
  2. Preparation: a short head and shoulder massage while you lie comfortably on the treatment table, eyes covered.
  3. Dhara: warm oil flows from a special vessel in a steady stream across the forehead, moving gently from side to side.
  4. Rest: you rest for a few minutes afterwards. Avoid washing your hair with cold water or going straight into strong sun or air-conditioning.

Traditionally used for

  • Stress, mental fatigue and burnout
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Tension headaches
  • Restlessness and poor concentration
  • General relaxation and rejuvenation

Shirodhara is usually given as a course of 7 to 14 sessions, often combined with Abhyanga. Variations include Takra Dhara (medicated buttermilk, more cooling) and Shiro Vasti (oil held on the head).

Who should avoid or adapt it

Shirodhara is usually postponed during fever, colds and sinus congestion, and adapted for pregnancy, low blood pressure and some neck conditions. Tell our doctor about any health condition or medicines.
