Many people notice more hair fall and dandruff after moving to the UAE. Heat, sweat, desalinated water, strong sun and drying air-conditioning all play a part, along with stress and irregular meals. Ayurveda looks at the scalp, but also at digestion, sleep and the doshas behind the problem.
How Ayurveda explains hair problems
- Pitta (heat) is linked with early greying, thinning and an inflamed, sensitive scalp – often worse in the UAE summer.
- Vata (dryness) is linked with dry, brittle hair, split ends and dry flaky dandruff.
- Kapha is linked with oily scalp, sticky dandruff and itching.
Knowing which pattern you have helps choose the right oil, wash routine and diet.
Everyday Ayurvedic hair care
- Oil the scalp one to three times a week with an oil chosen for your scalp type, leaving it on for 30–60 minutes before washing.
- Wash with lukewarm, not hot, water and a mild shampoo; a shower filter can help with hard water.
- Protect your hair from strong midday sun.
- Sleep on time – late nights are linked with hair fall in Ayurveda.
- Eat regular, freshly cooked meals with enough protein, and reduce very spicy, sour and fried food if your scalp feels hot or irritated.
Clinic therapies
For persistent problems, our doctors may suggest head therapies such as Thalapothichil (a cooling herbal head pack), Takra Dhara, Nasya and internal herbal medicines. See our Hair and Scalp Problems page.
When to check with a doctor
Sudden, patchy or heavy hair loss, hair loss after an illness, or hair fall with tiredness, weight change or irregular periods can have medical causes such as thyroid problems, low iron or vitamin deficiencies. A blood test is often a sensible first step, and we may ask for one.
Frequently asked questions
How long before I see a difference?
Hair grows slowly; most plans are reviewed after two to three months.
Should I oil my hair every day?
Not usually. Too much oil can make an oily scalp and dandruff worse. Ask our doctor what suits your scalp.
