Ayurvedic Diet Basics: How to Eat for Your Dosha

Ayurveda treats food as the first medicine. Rather than one diet for everyone, it suggests eating according to your constitution (Prakriti), your current imbalance, the season and your digestion. Here are the basics to get started.

The three doshas in a nutshell

  • Vata (air and space) – light, dry, cold and mobile. When out of balance: bloating, constipation, dry skin, anxiety, poor sleep.
  • Pitta (fire and water) – hot, sharp and intense. When out of balance: acidity, skin rashes, irritability, feeling overheated.
  • Kapha (earth and water) – heavy, stable and cool. When out of balance: sluggish digestion, weight gain, congestion, low motivation.

Eating to balance each dosha

  • Vata: warm, moist, grounding meals – soups, stews, cooked grains, ghee in moderation, root vegetables. Avoid too much raw, cold and dry food.
  • Pitta: cooling, less spicy food – cucumber, leafy greens, coconut, sweet fruits, basmati rice, mung dal. Reduce chilli, sour, fried and fermented foods.
  • Kapha: light, warm, well-spiced food – vegetables, lentils, millets, ginger and black pepper. Reduce heavy dairy, sweets and fried food.

The six tastes

Ayurveda recommends including all six tastes – sweet, sour, salty, pungent, bitter and astringent – across the day, adjusting the balance for your dosha. A typical South Indian or Middle Eastern home-cooked meal with vegetables, legumes, grains and spices often covers them naturally.

Habits matter as much as food

  • Eat at regular times, with the main meal at midday.
  • Eat when hungry and stop before you feel full.
  • Sit down and eat without screens.
  • Avoid iced drinks with meals.
  • Leave two to three hours between dinner and sleep.

How do I know my dosha?

Online quizzes give a rough idea, but your current imbalance can differ from your natural constitution. An Ayurvedic consultation includes a proper assessment and a diet plan made for you. See our Ayurvedic diet advice page.

If you have diabetes, kidney disease, food allergies or are pregnant, check any diet change with your doctor.
