Thinking about trying Ayurveda but not sure what happens at the first appointment? Many of our patients in Abu Dhabi tell us they expected a massage and were surprised by how detailed the consultation was. This guide walks you through a first visit to an Ayurvedic doctor, step by step, so you know exactly what to expect and how to prepare.
Why the consultation matters
Ayurveda treats the person, not only the symptom. Two people with the same complaint – say, acidity or back pain – may receive different advice, diet and therapies because their constitution and underlying imbalance are different. The consultation is how the doctor works this out.
Step 1: Your health history
The doctor will ask about your main concern, how long you have had it and what makes it better or worse. Expect questions about digestion, appetite, sleep, energy, stress, menstrual health for women, previous illnesses, surgeries, allergies, and every medicine or supplement you take.
Step 2: Prakriti – your body type
Ayurveda describes three doshas – Vata, Pitta and Kapha – and everyone has a natural combination of them, called Prakriti. Your body frame, skin, hair, appetite, sleep pattern and temperament all give clues. Understanding your Prakriti helps the doctor recommend the right diet, routine and oils for you.
Step 3: Vikriti – your current imbalance
The doctor then looks at Vikriti, the imbalance that is present now and is linked to your symptoms. Traditional examination methods include checking the pulse (Nadi Pariksha), looking at the tongue, eyes and skin, and asking about your stool and urine – all routine questions in Ayurveda.
Step 4: Your personalised plan
At the end of the consultation you will usually receive some or all of the following:
- Diet advice – foods to favour and avoid for your imbalance, adapted to life in the UAE.
- Daily routine (Dinacharya) – simple habits around sleep, meals, exercise and self-care.
- Herbal medicines, if needed.
- Therapies – for example Abhyanga, Kati Vasti or a wellness programme, with a suggested number of sessions.
- Yoga or breathing practices where helpful.
Nothing is started without your agreement, and you are welcome to ask questions about any part of the plan.
How to prepare for your first visit
- Bring recent blood tests, scans or doctor’s reports.
- Bring a list (or photos) of all medicines and supplements you take.
- Avoid a heavy meal just before the appointment.
- Avoid coloured drinks such as tea or coffee shortly before, as the doctor may look at your tongue.
- Wear comfortable clothing in case a therapy is started the same day.
- Bring your insurance card – we work with several insurance providers, and coverage depends on your plan.
Ayurveda alongside your regular doctor
Ayurveda can be used alongside modern medicine. Keep taking any prescribed medicines unless the doctor who prescribed them advises otherwise, and let both doctors know what you are using. For any emergency or severe symptom, go to a hospital first.
