Ayurveda for Eczema and Psoriasis: What to Expect

Eczema and psoriasis are long-term skin conditions that tend to flare and settle. The UAE climate – heat, sweat and dry air-conditioning – along with stress can make flares more frequent. Ayurveda approaches these conditions as a combination of digestion, blood (Rakta) and dosha imbalance, treating from the inside as well as on the skin.

How Ayurveda views skin conditions

Classical texts group many skin diseases under Kushta. Eczema-like conditions are often linked with Pitta and Kapha, and psoriasis-like conditions with Vata and Kapha. Poor digestion and certain food combinations are considered important triggers.

What treatment usually involves

  • Internal herbal medicines chosen for your type of skin condition.
  • Diet changes – often less sour, fermented, very spicy and fried food, and avoiding food combinations that Ayurveda considers incompatible (such as fish with milk).
  • External therapies – medicated oils and pastes (Lepanam), and Takra Dhara for scalp psoriasis and stress.
  • Cleansing such as Virechana within a Panchakarma programme for long-standing cases, if suitable.
  • Stress management, since stress is a common trigger.

Realistic expectations

Both conditions are chronic. Ayurvedic care aims to reduce flares, itching and discomfort and improve quality of life; results vary and usually take weeks to months. Regular reviews let your doctor adjust the plan.

Safety tips

  • Do not stop prescribed medicines or steroid creams suddenly – speak to the doctor who prescribed them.
  • Tell our doctors about every cream, tablet and supplement you use.
  • See a doctor promptly if skin becomes hot, swollen, painful or weeping, or if you develop fever – these can be signs of infection.

Daily skin care

  • Use lukewarm, not hot, showers and pat the skin dry.
  • Moisturise straight after bathing.
  • Wear loose cotton clothing.
  • Keep nails short to reduce damage from scratching.
