Shirodhara in Abu Dhabi: What It Is, Who It Helps and What to Expect

Shirodhara is often the first Ayurvedic therapy people in Abu Dhabi ask about. A thin, steady stream of warm herbal oil flows over the forehead for 30 to 45 minutes, and most people describe it as one of the most relaxing experiences they have had. Here is what actually happens, who it is traditionally used for, and how to get the most out of it.

What is Shirodhara?

The name comes from Sanskrit: shiro means head and dhara means flow. A special vessel hangs above the forehead and releases a continuous stream of warm medicated oil that moves gently from side to side. Depending on your needs, the doctor may choose oil, medicated milk (Ksheera Dhara) or medicated buttermilk (Takra Dhara).

Why people choose Shirodhara

In Ayurveda, Shirodhara is used to calm Vata and Pitta – the doshas associated with a restless mind, heat and dryness. People commonly book it for:

  • stress and mental fatigue
  • difficulty falling or staying asleep
  • tension headaches
  • feeling overheated, irritable or “wired”
  • general relaxation during a wellness programme

These are traditional uses and commonly reported experiences. Shirodhara supports wellbeing; it does not replace treatment for anxiety, depression or sleep disorders.

What happens in a session

  1. Consultation. Our doctor checks your health and chooses the oil and duration.
  2. Head and shoulder massage. A few minutes to relax and prepare.
  3. The flow. You lie on your back with your eyes covered while the warm oil flows over your forehead for 30–45 minutes.
  4. Rest. You rest for a while afterwards. Avoid cold water on the head, strong sun and direct air-conditioning for the rest of the day.

How many sessions?

For relaxation, a single session is enjoyable on its own. As part of a treatment plan, Shirodhara is usually given daily for 7 to 14 days, often with Abhyanga before it.

Who should avoid or adapt it

Shirodhara is usually postponed during fever, colds, sinus congestion and right after heavy meals. It is adapted for pregnancy, very low blood pressure and some neck conditions. Tell our doctor about your health and any medicines.

Frequently asked questions

Will my hair be oily?

Yes. Bring a scarf or cap; wash the oil out later with warm water and a mild shampoo.

Is Shirodhara the same as Shiro Vasti?

No. In Shiro Vasti the oil is held on the head inside a cap rather than poured.

Can I drive afterwards?

Most people can, but many feel very relaxed and sleepy, so plan a quiet evening.
